AirTrain
Queens, New York


A joint venture of Perini, Slattery/Skanska (USA), Karl Koch Erecting and STV Group was responsible for the design and construction of the 8.4-mile AirTrain. Dedicated in December 2003, the AirTrain carries passengers between terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport and connects with regional mass transit systems at Jamaica Station, a new intermodal transportation facility being built by a Perini-led joint venture.


Jamaica Station

Owned and administered by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Jamaica Station is an intermodal hub for three of the region's most critical mass transit systems including the AirTrain, the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and the New York City Transit (NYCT) subway and bus lines. Perini has been successful in controlling conditions that could negatively impact workforce productivity - site congestion, concurrent operations and strict work rules - by constantly evaluating its construction plan and seizing short-lived windows of opportunity to progress the work. The project was recently awarded the "2004 Airport Project of the Year" by the New York Construction News.

Perini drew upon its versatility to build the seven-level, 280,000-square-foot VCB/CCB which enables travelers to safely transfer between the AirTrain, commuter rail service and the subway while construction continued on major elements of the construction program.

LIRR Platform Reconstruction

The LIRR is the busiest commuter railroad in North America. To ensure continuous, uninterrupted service and the safety of workers and travelers during the demolition and replacement of commuter rail platforms, Perini is closely coordinating its work schedule with railroad operations, concentrating its efforts on off-peak hours.




Long Island Expressway

The reconstruction of the interchange of the Long Island Expressway and the Cross Island Parkway for the New York State Department of Transportation was substantially completed in 2003. The elimination of cloverleaf ramps, realignment and widening of the roadway, and replacement or reconstruction of 14 bridges were critical components of the work. New pedestrian underpasses and restored nature trails have re-established the 12-acre Alley Pond Park as one of the community's most valued assets.

Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel

Perini has played a significant role in Boston's "Big Dig" since its inception. Alone or in joint venture, we have been responsible for major components of the project including:

  • a 2,200-foot-long, cut-and-cover northbound tunnel beneath Atlantic Avenue (turned over to follow-on finish contractors in 2000);
  • underpinning of an active subway track and station during tunnel construction;
  • coordination of the construction of 10,000 lineal feet of pre-cast segmental viaducts at the I-93/I-90 Interchange;
  • stabilization of 700,000 cubic yards of soils at the Fort Point Channel to accommodate tunnel jacking operations in the area; and
  • construction of 1,400-foot-long mainline cut-and-cover tunnel sections beneath the existing elevated artery.

Perini is involved on several important design, build, operate and maintain (DBOM) transportation projects in the Northeast. As a member of the Air Rail Transit Consortium, the joint venture of Perini, Slattery/Skanska (USA), Karl Koch Erecting, and STV Group is constructing the pre-cast segmental elevated guideways of the $750 million, 8.4-mile Airtrain that will link nine passenger terminals at JFK International Airport with parking areas as well as mass transit and rail systems serving New York City and Long Island. A Perini/Tutor Saliba joint venture has begun construction of the $320 million Jamaica Station, an important component of the JFK light rail project.

Los Lomas (Martinez Nadal) Station,

When completed, Tren Urbano will link the San Juan Central Business District with the outlying community of Bayamon. Los Lomas is one of two stations to be built as part of the systems and test track turnkey contract, and will serve as an intermodal link between transit riders and buses or taxis.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System

As subcontractor to the 21st Century Rail Corporation, a joint venture of Perini/Slattery is completing a $350 million design/build civil works contract to construct 15 miles of track and overhead catenary power feed, eight new viaduct structures, and 16 stations. The DBOM project was honored with the American Public Transportation Association's Innovation Award in 2000.

Triborough Bridge Deck Replacement

When the original groundbreaking for the Triborough Bridge took place in 1929, renowned engineer Robert Moses was incredulous to discover that none of the approaches to the span had been designed.  Today, three roadways totalling twenty-two lanes of traffic converge from Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, creating a complex intersection of spans and ramps that will be repaired or replaced under this contract. 

  • $125.4 million contract as Perini/Thunderbird JV
  • Demolition and replacement of Randall's Island Junction structure and deck
  • Removal and replacement of substructure, superstructure and decks at the Truss Span and Bronx approach.
  • Construction of a de-icing facility
  • New electrical, lighting, ventilation, fire alarm and public address systems.

Williamsburg Bridge, Brooklyn, New York
New York City DOT

At the time of award, the reconstruction of New York City's second-oldest suspension bridge was the single largest contract awarded by the New York City DOT.  The original contract required a Perini-led joint venture to remove and replace the south roadway on the 2,800-foot-long bridge deck and to reconstruct the Manhattan and Brooklyn approaches.  Added to the scope of the contract was the construction of 34 concrete pier supports for the New York City Transit Authority tracks which run through the middle of the bridge.  New York Construction News named the Williamsburg Bridge project the "Heavy Construction Project of the Year" (1998).
 

Brooklyn Queens Expressway
Brooklyn, NY

Workers prepare tendons for post-tensioning of pre-cast concrete box segments of a major 1,400-foot-long connector ramp that will tie the Williamsburg Bridge to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Twin curved pre-cast concrete box segmental structures will be installed in two stages to maintain traffic flow during the course of the project.
